Storage Tips
Furniture
Disassemble bed frames and tie them together. Use zip lock bags to store hardware and tape the bags to the furniture they belong to. When stacking furniture, use blankets or towels between them to prevent scratching. Store furniture frames carefully so they do not fall on other furniture. Never use plastic to wrap furniture in non-climate controlled units as moisture can condense under it causing mold. Use old sheets or cotton instead. Stand mattresses on end, as well as sofas with pallets or cardboard under them for ventilation. Walls may develop condensation, therefore it is not advisable to lean items against the walls.
Pictures and Mirrors
Wrap pictures that are small and stand them on end in boxes. For larger ones, buy special picture boxes. Consider using foam or bubble wrap to prevent scratching.
Electronic Equipment
It is a good idea to use the original cartons or boxes. If you don't have them, pack items carefully and use cushion material such as bubble wrap or foam. Pack items separately. Tie down tone arms for record players. Cd's and vinyl records can warp in heat, so consider climate controlled for these items.
Crystal, China, and Fine Glassware
Use a double ply dish barrel box, preferrably with cardboard inserts for these items. Wrap each piece in blank newsprint or foam. Add packing material to the bottom and top of the dish boxes and label them fragile. Stack these boxes on top.
Clothing, Curtains, Draperies
Use non-rusting hangers. Wardrobe boxes are a good choice since they have a bar inserted for hanging garments. Folded garments can be stored in dresser drawers to conserve space. Use cedar or moth balls for woolens to prevent moth damage.
Kitchen & Laundry
You can put several small appliances in a box. Be sure to put packing material between them. Label all boxes. It is a good idea to label box indicating what room it goes in and the items it contains. You can stack pots and pans with padding in between. Bowls can be packed in a similar fashion. One idea for your "drawer type stuff" is to use a large plastic ziploc bag for the contents of each drawer and pack these bags in a box. Always consider the weight of what you are putting in boxes. It is better to opt for 2 smaller boxes than one awkward heavy one.
Appliances
Tape doors shut while moving, but remove the tape before storing to avoid tape residue. Wedge doors open in storage to prevent mildew. You can use this valuable space for item such as blankets and towels. Use up partial bottles and boxes of laundry/cleaning products and food goods before moving. You can place laundry items in the washer and dryer. Be sure boxes are taped shut and bottles will not leak. You can always use plastic bags to insure against leakage.
Natural Threats
Freezing can be a problem as well as extreme heat. Do not store items that are temperature sensitive. Do not store food in boxes since this will attract insects and rodents. Condition leather furniture to protect it from drying out.
Metals
It might be a good idea to put a few drops of oil on items that might rust. Insure that these items don't come in contact with other items.
Books and other Valuables
Pack books together in small boxes. Big boxes of books can weigh too much. Store valuable papers in plastic bags. Consider putting boxes on pallets or something to keep them off the floor. You may want to consider dusting boxes with powder crawling insecticide to prevent silverfish.
Helpful tips for Moving & Storage
Plan your move early, if possible. Notify your postal service. Change banks, if necessary. Put in change of addresses to all subscriptions and other mailings. Make sure you have a reservation for the equipment you need for the move: trucks, dollies, and other moving items. Have plenty of rope, tape and boxes on hand for packing and tying down. If possible, make sure you choose a storage unit that is large enough to house all your belongings, with room for air to circulate and space for you to move about the unit. This will avoid you having to pull everything out of the unit in the event you or your family needs something from a stored box. Our staff will assist you in choosing the right size unit for your belongings.
